Green Books wins the Environmental Award at the Independent Publishing Awards 2010

We were delighted to receive our second award within a year for our commitment to environmental issues. The citation reads as follows:

“This award is recognition of Green Books’ commitment to raising awareness of environmental issues over more than two decades — long before most other publishers found them fashionable or profitable. The judges were impressed by the company’s broad environmental list and evidence of its activity and success in 2009. They also admired Green Books’ efforts to make its activities as eco friendly as possible by, for instance, printing only within 150 miles of its Devon offices and using recycled paper wherever possible. “Green Books really does try to practice what it preaches,” said the judges.”

We were delighted to win this award for our book Herbs for Home Treatment by Anna Newton, which like all of our books is printed in the UK on recycled paper using vegetable inks. The printers were T J International of Padstow in Cornwall.

The Bookseller’s list of bestselling environmental books in 2009 includes Rob Hopkins’ The Transition Handbook at number 7.

Rob Hopkins is the winner of the 2009 Energy Saving Trust/Guardian ‘Green Community Hero’ award. The Energy Saving Trust launched the Green Communities awards, building on its work with communities over the last few years. The awards celebrate groups and individuals who excel in energy saving. Commenting on winning the award, Rob said that “this is actually an award for everyone out there doing Transition in communities around the world. Although these kind of things have my name written on them, they are really an acknowledgement of the incredible work the wider movement is doing.”

Rob has also won the 2009 Observer Ethical Award for Grassroots Campaigner.  Well done to Rob and to everyone involved with the Transition movement – what a tremendous achievement.

We are developing a whole series of books for the Transition movement – you can see full details on our separate Transition website. They include Local Money: how to make it happen in your community by Peter North, Communities, Councils and a low-carbon future by Alexis Rowell and also Transition Communities: a pocket guide by Mike Grenville and Rob Hopkins.
