DISCOVERING GREEN LANES

THE LOST LANE

Mapping exercise (see below for instructions)

INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING THE LOST LANE MAP

Each child is given a copy of The Lost Lane basic map. The children complete the map in pencil and then when the answers are given they can colour the map in as follows:

River and pond BLUE
Blacksmith’s Forge and Church BLACK
Pasture GREEN
Arable fields YELLOW
New Road GREY
Circular green lane GREEN

Instructions for completing the map

1. Draw in two broken lines to show the Prehistoric hunter’s tracks to the river.

2. Divide the land marked ‘A’ on Mudge’s FArm into two pasture fields - one for sheep and the other for cows.

3. Divide the land marked ‘B’ on ‘Mudge’s Farm’ into three arable fields - one for oats, a second for wheat and the third for barley.

4. The road to the Church did not go any further. Draw in the Church.

5. The hunter’s tracks formed one packhorse lane to the Port. Draw another lane for the packhorses coming back from the Port. This new lane will join the main lane near the figure of the hunter.

6. Using small pencil arrows show the walk along the lane from Mudge’s Farm to the Church.

7. Draw in the Blacksmith’s Forge on the widest bend of a road where there is water available for the horses to drink and room for them to rest.

8. Draw in a straight road from the Port to Downtown - the new Turnpike road.

9. Draw in a short joining lane from X to Y to form a circular green lane suitable for a Sunday afternoon walk.

10. Now colour in your map
